This is the second time I have used Wikis, so I am looking forward to learning more and getting the most out of them for our team use as well as for other non-school applications.

I too, am new to using Wikis and different types of learning but am enjoying every minute of it.

Hi, All. I am getting use to using Wikis too - my first time... (Van)

On this page, we can flesh out our operating standards for this course.

From what I hear so far, it sounds as though 8:30 or 9:30 EST is a good meeting time if and when we need to talk synchronously. Please clarify if this is not a good time for you. I'm more of a 9 or 9:30 person as that's when I'm more confident the babies will be in bed. If Wikis is not comfortable, we can certainly use another platform for our collaboration. Last class, our team had a thread within the discussion board for chatting, though it was asynchronous. I also like Etherpad for synchronous collaboration. I'm not a tech person, so I'm open and happy to learn from those of you who are!

I'm fine with 9 PM. I have children and they should be out by then. In my last group we met once a week online and talked about the weekly group assignment. It seems like our hours are different so maybe chatting asynchronously might be best. I really do not know what etherpad is but I'm willing to try it. (L. Kernizan)

If we are going to meet online weekly, it sounds like the consensus is 9pm (?), which is 8pm my time. Also, I am in agreement, especially from past experiences that it would be great if we could all check the team's thread daily to check for new messages; I am also in the habit of checking my email daily. Pink is a good color for me. (Van)

Based on last class's experiences, I find that setting deadlines for posting/participating on team projects very helpful for keeping the flow going. I also found that asynchronous discussion worked well when we all checked and responded to our email and other collaborative tools frequently (daily at least). What do you think? It's nice if we each pick a color to use. I like purple (Go Ravens!!).

I appreciate and honor deadline and would like to keep that going through this course. We should try to make an effort to check e-mail at least once a day. (L. Kernizan)

Nancy, I think you wanted to be the reporter for the first two weeks. If it works for everyone, we can say then that I'll be facilitator the first two weeks, and everyone can pick from the coach and resource person roles. From there, someone (reporter?) could arrange the rest of the course's schedule. Now would be a good time to put requests in for lighter or heavier duties.

My question is where do we want to post items and have discussions? I'm willing to try anything new or old. (L. Kernizan)

Hi girls- I guess we are meeting 9 pm. Still on Wed. evenings? With my last class we used conference call. It was great. Just tell me what we are going to use to collabrate. I am learning the technology world so I am opened to new ways of communicating. Nancy

In the meantime, please also read the following suggestions from our coursebook:

  • Based on your experience in the previous course, what areas do you feel need to be addressed by your team to be most successful?
    • creating & adhering to roles & due dates (Van)
  • Do you have any scheduling issues that your teammates should be aware of? How will you work collaboratively to complete the team discussions and activities?
    • no real scheduling issues; by adhering to set norms & expectations, as well as checking email, etc. daily (Van)
  • What organizational structure can you use in your team forum to make discussions manageable and resources easy to locate? Do you have a preference for completing activities synchronously or asynchronously? Do you prefer to use Google Docs, Skype, Wikispaces or other non-ELC applications?
    • Since I am on email multiple times a day, everyday, email works best for me. I also am making it a habit of checking the ELC daily. If we agree to meet as a team synchronously, can we set the time & "place" early in the week? So far, the wiki is working OK (I guess I'm using it correctly :o)...). I have a Skype account, but am still working on how to use it...this may provide me the opportunity. (Van)
